Users of theLinux operating systemcan now
download the latest version of theK Desktop
Environment, which has been designed to
improve support of mobile devices and multimedia.
The new version, called KDE 4.0, provides an open source desktop
system. It includes Okular, a new document viewer and Dolphin, a
new filemanager. Versions of these applications are being developed
for Windows and Mac OS and are expected to surface in the first
half of 2008.
KDE's goal is to provide an open source alternative to systems
such as
Microsoft Windows Vista and
Apple Mac OS X. It now includes the Phonon framework, which
provides platform independent multimedia support to all KDE
applications, and the Solid framework, which allows applications to
interact with portable devices and other hardware, such as
networking and power management services.
