Yelp deploys Splunk to improve data access

Yelp uses Splunk Enterprise in IT and across business services to help build revenue opportunities

Online business directory Yelp has deployed Splunk Enterprise to help drive new revenue opportunities across its business.

The company has used Splunk to enable more employees to gain access to data across the organisation, making it easily accessible to teams outside of IT.

Prior to standardising on the Splunk platform, Yelp explored various ways to manage data growth, including leveraging using open-source tools.

Due to increased data demands, scaling and correlating disparate data sets in real time, the company said it found using just open-source tools was not possible.

Yelp deployed Splunk Enterprise to bolster its open-source strategy, correlating all log and server data in one central point to allow users – whether engineers, IT operations or business users – to quickly gain actionable insights.

Splunk Enterprise now supports application management and delivery, IT operations troubleshooting and monitoring, as well as business analytics.

“Yelp is a digital-first business. An excess of 10 terabytes per day flows into Splunk Enterprise, so the ability to quickly access and insights from that data in real time is invaluable,” said Kris Wehner, vice-president of engineering at Yelp Reservations.

“With Splunk, we put data into the hands of Yelp teams and users that historically had no access or insight. The team can now pinpoint underperforming services by examining the changes in user-response time, as well as be notified in real time of issues on the site to ensure issues are solved faster.”

Splunk Enterprise is also being deployed to support customer-facing portions of the business, such as business operations and community management. Monitoring the Eat24 food delivery service is achieved using Splunk, which provides operational teams with customised dashboards and real-time alerts to track food deliveries.

Yelp runs on a cloud-based IT infrastructure using Amazon Web Services (AWS) along with Amazon’s Redshift data warehouse. It has built an extension to Amazon Redshift to bring data into Splunk, which enables it to visualise all its data logs in one place.
