Using dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology, Cisco's new ONS 15530 can multiplex as many as 40 ESCON (Enterprise Systems Connection) channels over a single 10Gbps wavelength.
According to Dave Lively, senior manager of optical strategy for Cisco, the idea of the 15530 and the rest of the COMET (Complete Optical Multiservice Edge and Transport) family of products is to aggregate any service over any optical technology.
"Optical helps consolidate all services over one network," said Lively. "The blending of Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and ATM results in cost savings."
Lively explained that the company is extending the product line to the enterprise for a number of reasons, including helping enterprises lower their cost of bandwidth and increase their capacity.
"Enterprises want to evolve their transport networks to add photonics and optics," said Lively. "With the 15530, enterprises can aggregate services over a single wavelength."
The 15530 joins the Cisco ONS 15540 and the Cisco ONS 15200 series in Cisco's COMET family. The Cisco ONS 15530 can be used to transport voice, data networking, storage, and video using 32 wavelengths multiplexed. In addition, 2.5 to 10 gigabits of data can be transported on one wavelength.
The Cisco ONS 15530 system will be available in July and will start at $54,000 (£35,917).
