The report reveals that one in four of the 100 IT managers surveyed work close to a 60 hour week, the equivalent of four hours overtime every day, which the authors claim is a direct result of the introduction of Internet based applications to their business.
Over a quarter of respondents said a lack of resources was the top reason for the increased hours, with over a fifth saying the pressure of development work was the cause. A further 14% cited 'out of hours' support calls, whilst a tenth blamed 'tight or unrealistic deadlines'.
The government sector seems to be suffering most, with all those responding to the survey saying they worked beyond the standard working week which, according to the European Working Time Directive, shouldn't exceed 48 hours.
The poll also placed the hardest working IT managers in the South of England, closely followed by the Midlands and London.
David Godwin, vice president of strategy and marketing at Attenda, believes UK companies will need to adopt a 24-hour culture if they are to succeed in the Internet economy, but says companies are adding the responsibility onto existing heavy workloads. "It could be said that in-house technology teams are the junior doctors of the cyber world. While burn-out among IT managers is not a matter of life and death, the potential to cause damage to their companies' online presence is great."
