A prolific speaker and commentator on IT issues, particularly with respect to public policy, Fishenden was a key member of the team that guided Microsoft's technology strategy.

In an email announcing his departure on 17 June, he said: "There are some unique and exciting career opportunities externally at present for me to take up, about which you will doubtless hear more over coming months."
He will continue to lecture at the London School of Economics, where he is a senior visiting fellow, and promises his blog, tweets and other media activities will continue unabated.
