Oracle has embarked on a middleware project in an attempt to fully absorb products it has acquired from the purchase of PeopleSoft and Retek.

The Fusion middleware will also accommodate the JD Edwards range of products which were part of the PeopleSoft product line.

Oracle’s approach mirrors that of SAP with its Netweaver solution, which allows SAP users to easily integrate and manage various SAP business software solutions.

The first server-based Fusion platform is expected by the end of 2005, but Oracle said the overall project would take several years.

The Fusion middleware is expected to include a Java-based application server and a web portal. There will also be business intelligence software tools and collaboration software available to customers.
