PlayBook on target for BlackBerry, misses Cius, iPad targets

Research In Motion’s newly-unveiled PlayBook tablet is on target for its core BlackBerry customers who appreciate the enhanced security around their brand, says research firm Gartner.

But, the PlayBook is basically a companion device to the Blackberry, according to Carolina Milanesi, mobile device specialist at Gartner.

So really no Apple iPad killer or threat to Cisco’s Cius, then.

Minanesi sees the Cius as an extension to the communication suite, so not a direct competitor, and competing head to head with iPad will be a much harder game to play for RIM, she says.

Success for RIM against the iPad really depends on its ability to build a community for creating applications, but with a new operating system, they are essentially starting from scratch.
