AMD is launching three new dual-core 2.6GHz Opteron server processors, to bulk up its challenge to Intel in the server market.

The new dual-core Opteron 185, 285 and 885 processors all run at 2.6GHz and can deliver application processing improvements of up to 15%, said AMD.

The top-of-the-range processors surpass previous top models which run at 2.4GHz.

Intel is hosting its Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco this week, where it also is expected to launch better performing processors.

AMD’s 185 model is designed for single-processor servers, and the 285 chip is for dual-processor systems. The 885 model is for four- or eight-processor platforms.

Dual-core processors are designed with two processors on a single wafer of silicon, to almost double single-core application processing speeds.
