Lloyds TSB is piloting an Internet banking service for business customers, in what it says is the first large-scale smartcard-enabled banking scheme in Europe.

Customers will have their personalised smartcards and readers, which they will use with a password.

The service is called key online banking. Users identify themselves, using their smartcard and password to the Lloyds TSB certificate issuing authority, which uses Entrust Direct PKI software. It then confirms their identity to the bank and "unlocks" access to the account.
