Glasgow City Council is to implement SAP enterprise software in a project to consolidate 200 software packages across its finance, HR, payroll, sales and purchasing departments.

The council has awarded a £6.5m, 18-month implementation contract to ITNet for the deployment of MySAP Business Suite and the SAP enterprise portal for its 28,000 employees.

Stephen Crichton, programme manager of Glasgow's 1 Business project, which is overseeing the implementation, said the project would reduce duplication of administration and allow the development of e-purchasing and online recruitment.

"The SAP system will also free up management time to focus on delivering front-line council services," he said.

The council has set up a project team of 40 council employees and 20 ITNet specialists to manage the implementation. However, Glasgow Council is planning to manage the system itself once it has been rolled out.
