With iPhone 4.0 Apple has made the iPhone enterprise ready. The new operating sytsem is mutli-tasking, supports SSL VPNs for secure connections to corporate networks, and includes a suite of APIs for protecting data and managing iPhones.
Apple is also allowing enterprises to distribute their own iPhone apps, securely via their internal WiFi networks. Although Nokia and Microsoft offer smartphone OSs that are enterprise-ready, compared to Apple, they have failed to amass the sheer numbers of developers and variety of apps. Research in Motion had better watch out. If Apple can convince commercial and in-house enterprise developers to write software for the iPhone 4.0, the Blackberry may finally have a serious rival in the enterprise.
