Self-service tools - Sonatype: The unseen risks lurking inside the platform

Mitun Zavery, regional vice president at Sonatype says that there are “unseen risks” lurking inside self-service developer platforms.

Zavery suggests that self-service platforms are now standard with modern engineering teams. They help developers pick dependencies, push releases and manage the routine parts of delivery without waiting on central teams.

But, he says, there’s a problem quietly growing underneath them: many of the decisions these systems make depend entirely on the quality of the vulnerability data they ingest and that data is slipping.

Most developers assume their platform has their back. They expect it to warn them when something is dangerous, surface issues worth acting on and stay out of the way when everything looks clean. That only works when the feeds behind the scenes are up to date.

Today, they often aren’t.

Where the data breaks down

So far this year, 1,552 open-source vulnerabilities have been disclosed. Almost two-thirds (64%) arrived without a severity score from the National Vulnerability Database (NVD). Only a third (36%) were ready for any kind of automated triage. Even among the scored entries, the reliability is shaky: fewer than one in five ratings matched real-world risk. Most were off and some by a wide margin.

The delays are even harder to defend.

Scoring lags stretch past six weeks on average and in extreme cases approach a full year. Attackers move far faster. Meanwhile, we’ve identified nearly 20,000 false positives and over 150,000 false negatives across CVE records that feed the data pipelines of self-service systems.

When developers rely on automation built on flawed data, two outcomes follow: time is wasted on trivial issues, true threats are missed.

How this affects self-service 

Developer autonomy works when the platform provides guardrails that stay out of the way yet catch real hazards. But when scoring gaps, stale intelligence and inconsistent records flow into the system, the whole model starts to wobble.

A pipeline may label a vulnerability as low risk purely because the metadata is missing. Or an issue may sit invisible for weeks because the feed hasn’t updated. Developers assume everything is green and continue their work. Meanwhile, an attacker has already turned that package into a foothold. The trust breaks down quickly.

This is where vibe coding, the developer instinct to trust the signals, patterns and cues coming from their tools, becomes fragile. When the signals are wrong, the vibes are wrong. And once the platform starts ‘feeling’ unreliable, developers fall back to manual approvals and gut checks, slowing delivery and eroding the very autonomy the platform was meant to support.

The threats already inside

Our latest research found 34,319 malicious open-source packages published in Q3 alone. Roughly a third (37%) were created solely to siphon data from developer environments. These are not theoretical constructs. They are designed to sit inside the very workflows engineers use daily.

Attackers study disclosure feeds, maintainers, bug trackers and ecosystem chatter. When a maintainer account is taken over, the entire dependency graph downstream is exposed. We’ve observed this repeatedly: one maintainer compromise, millions of downloads affected. It’s easy to see how these patterns fit into everyday developer self-service tools.

What teams can do now

To keep self-service fast while reducing avoidable risk, platform teams should focus on a few concrete steps:

Use multiple intelligence sources

If a single feed misses something, the platform shouldn’t inherit that blind spot. Cross-checking helps surface issues that lack scores, contain conflicting details or appear suspicious.

Treat stale data as a risk condition

If a vulnerability sits unscored beyond an agreed time window, don’t wait. Force an escalation path or treat it as high-risk until proven otherwise.

Make data quality visible inside the platform

Developers need to know when the system is operating with partial or ageing information. Simple signals (e.g. “score missing,” “data aged,” “source uncertain”) go a long way toward preserving trust.

Base decisions on context, not blunt severity labels

Severity on its own rarely reflects real exposure. Automated decisions should consider how a dependency is used, whether it’s reachable, how old it is and if it has known exploit activity.

Treat intelligence pipelines as part of core infrastructure

If the platform depends on this data to function safely, then maintaining its quality deserves the same attention as any other critical component.

As developers take on increasing responsibility for their stack, the platforms supporting them must evolve accordingly. Often, the biggest risks don’t lie at the edges; many sit quietly inside the very tools designed to accelerate delivery. When the data feeding those tools degrades, the automation built on top of it starts to slip as well.

Self-service works best when people can trust the guardrails. That trust comes from reliable intelligence, not simply more automation. Until the data improves, teams may move quickly, but without a clear view of the road ahead.
