Stop press: Christmas shoppers are using the Internet!

Has everyone in retail Public Relations gone mad? All I have seen for the past couple of days are various conflicting reports about what percentage of consumers are going to do their Christmas shopping online this year.
Does anyone care any longer?
Are we still in 1997 and talking about Amazon.com as the replacement for every bookstore on every high street?
I don’t think there are many consumers who now differentiate between online and shopping in person – it’s all a part of the same thing – shopping. Sometimes I go to Tesco in person, sometimes I order from them online. I don’t think about it as anything different, it’s just a different channel to get stuff from Tesco into my fridge.
Why does everyone think it remains newsworthy that consumers are buying Christmas presents using the Internet?
