This week’s riots in the UK have been marked by the role of social media sites and other forms of electronic communication such as Blackberry messenger.
The arrest of two men in Cardiff for inciting criminality by misusing social networking site Facebook, is another interesting development.
In making the arrests, South Wales Police have proved that they are moving with the times and that they are policing the online community as well.
This is commendable, particularly in the light of the fact that police resources are by all accounts thinly stretched and funding for computer-related policing is still limited, although improving.
It will be interesting to canvass the opinion of the legal community on the arrests to see if these arrests set any important precedents and what we can possibly expect in future.
