NHS Trust lost diary with personal data

An interesting data “breach” reported on the Breach Blog where a midwife’s diary containing personal information on hundreds of new and expectant mothers has been lost from a Health Trust in Greater Manchester.

I make a big point in my own organisation about the need to protect all sensitive data, not just the electronic type. A handwritten diary might not seem like an obvious target of a security awareness campaign but no-one would deny the senstivity of the information within it.

One of the problems is data complacency. It’s easy to become desensitised to the risks of a job. Frequent reminders are needed. No doubt every mid-wife in the NHS will now suddenly be very aware of their diary and keeping a slightly tighter grip on it.
