Mirapoint tackles junk e-mail

Spam, or junk e-mail, is reaching epidemic proportions and antivirus and messaging companies have latched onto the market potential of developing new products to reduce the flow, writes Eric Doyle.

Mirapoint is the latest to offer protection within its Message Server and Message Director products.

Claiming to use "smart tools" to detect spam, the company says these can be configured using a browser or at the command-line level. Controls can be configured on a domain or individual user basis and the administrator can define whether suspect mail is deleted immediately or filtered into a specified folder.

The ability to redirect the mail means that any e-mails wrongly identified as junk can be retrieved and the administrator can also collect metrics on the origin of the highest numbers of junk mail.

However, Mirapoint says fewer genuine e-mails will be blocked because of its use of heuristic rules-based scanning, friends and black lists, content filtering, and other key security features, such as SMTP-based authentication.
