Video: Robot warfare – revenge of the drones

BBC Radio 4 is starting a new series called Robo Wars on how machines are taking over from soldiers and pilots to fight wars. In Part One, the programme covers robotic drones (or unmanned aerial vehicles).

In November, The Times reported that the US military was planning to use drones to resupply troops fighting in Afghanistan.

In the UK, No. 39 Squadron of the Royal Air Force has been operating the MQ-9 Reaper robotic drone since 2007, from Creech AFB, Nevada, USA.

In this video, Major Steven Peak describes the 240mph Reaper MQ-9 as a "Hunter Killer"

While the military argues that drones can save lives, there is a very real risk that as the technology evolves to use artificial intelligence, robotic drones may become Terminator-style robotic killers.
