Women in Computing through the years: Computer Weekly’s Archive

Programmers plus: Computer Weekly 1969

Back in 1969 the negative stereotypes of beer and pizza guzzling IT nerds working in the basement were yet to appear, hence why this job vacancies page in Computer Weekly featured an advert equally encouraging both men and women to apply for positions in programming.

Featuring a team of two men and two women the ad reads: “Would you like to be a part of this problem-solving team?”

Google are sponsoring a Women in Computing Gallery at TNMOC unveiled at Bletchley Park this month. Dame Steve Shirley was in attendance for the launch.

Two Google interns have been researching women in computing in the Computer Weekly archive and shared their findings with us.
