The Mining and Construction Equipment (M&CE) division of Voltas offers mining excavators, dump trucks, track-mounted crushers, crawler cranes, concrete mixing plants, etc. It also implements projects and undertakes maintenance and repair services for mining and construction companies.

With each spare costing about Rs 5 lakh, spares management is an important activity for M&CE. The M&CE staff constantly monitors the spares stock and supply trends. It is imperative to track any abrupt increase in spares’ prices as it could hit profitability of contracts. These activities were manual and time-consuming prior to SAP BO implementation.

Today these issues stand largely addressed with BI. SAP BO allows M&CE team to do what-if/regression analysis directly from the dashboard. For instance, if the cost of a spare/manpower goes up, the tool shows its impact on profitability.

With BI, the M&CE is able to forecast factors such as spares consumption, pricing trends, extra working hours needed due to maintenance, etc. The solution has provided visibility into spares-sales across geographies and helped M&CE to plan and budget better.

Prasanna Wadke, senior manager - corporate IT, Voltas Ltd says, "Earlier the division's profit deviation was about 13%; with SAP BO, it has reduced to near-zero."
