The government has unveiled a procurement website for public sector organisations, designed to reduce their costs. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is among the first organisations to subscribe to the Zanzibar Service.
The service can be used by public sector organisations in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. It is estimated that the public sector currently makes supply purchases from private companies totalling £125bn a year.
OGCbuying.solutions negotiated a contract with PA Consulting to set up the procurement site.
The move to an on-line buying market is part of the government's response to the Gershon review, which called for public sector efficiency gains.
