Appear Networks is to launch a wireless server in the UK which can automatically offer tailored applications to a user connecting inside a wireless hotspot, dependant on the device they are using.
The Appear Provisioning Server (APS) contains a “context aware” engine that enables services and applications to be presented automatically to a user, depending on the time, location, user profile and type of device being used.
The APS is designed to create a “workspot” from a standard wireless hotspot, by providing productivity applications to visitors and employees.
A workspot could be an airport lounge, for instance, where both staff and passengers have access to the APS. When a user enters a workspot with a wirelessly-enabled device the APS automatically detects that device and sends it a variety of application choices in the form of service icons that can be clicked to download applications.
This process is completed through Appear’s Click & Run software. The application is automatically removed from the device when the device leaves the workspot, but you can save elements of the service for offline use at a later date.
The APS is already being used by transportation and other companies in France and Sweden, including rail operator SNCF in France.
