The introduction of the euro may mean that European manufacturers get a larger choice of enterprise software and can benefit from niche US manufacturing software.

Because of the size of the US market, some mid-range US ERP suppliers have strengths in business process modelling but are weak when it comes to making multicurrency calculations. The introduction of the euro will mean manufacturers can take advantage of technology from these suppliers.

Simon Bragg, European research director at consultancy ARC, said, "Now may be the time for some European manufacturers to look at sourcing software from US ERP suppliers who are good at manufacturing but have been historically weak in multicurrency environments.

"For ERP suppliers such as Made2manage and Lilly, for example, the introduction of the euro across a number of countries removes the hurdle of dealing with many currencies and allows them to make the most of their manufacturing expertise."
