SmartBear fills honeypot of AI-ready API governance
Software quality and visibility company SmartBear has detailed new Swagger capabilities.
SmartBear Swagger is a suite of tools for designing, building, documenting and testing RESTful APIs (standardised web services using http methods to manage resource data) using the OpenAPI specification.
The company says it wants to help users govern, validate and scale APIs even as AI accelerates software development.
As AI coding tools are increasing development velocity in some teams, a number of developers will see that they also introduce new risks… meaning that APIs are generated, modified and consumed faster than ever, often without sufficient visibility or validation.
Strong governance and continuous verification can help ensure application integrity–continuous, measurable assurance that software works as intended with governance to operate at AI speed and scale.
Platform engineering boost
SmartBear’s new Swagger updates close these gaps. They give platform and engineering teams the confidence that APIs built at AI speed are still correct, compliant, and production-ready. Key innovations include:
- A revamped Swagger Catalogue to improve API visibility so platform teams have a view into AI-generated APIs and can enforce governance.
Swagger Catalog provides a unified view of API portfolios with lifecycle tracking. It establishes a governance foundation as AI generates and modifies APIs at scale. And, it enables systematic quality maintenance for higher confidence in AI-accelerated development.
- Swagger Contract Testing with drift detection. This continuously verifies that real API behaviour matches OpenAPI contracts and prevents silent divergence that can break AI agent integrations and erode documentation trust.
It also ensures that AI-assisted changes maintain application integrity and contract compliance. Engineering teams maintain application integrity through continuous validation and organisations can accelerate development while reducing risk and maintaining quality.
“API programs are scaling across the enterprise. But platform leaders struggle with fragmented discovery and a lack of lifecycle visibility, and engineering and QA teams face silent spec-to-runtime divergence,” said Vineeta Puranik, SmartBear CPTO. “These new Swagger capabilities combine centralised visibility, automated governance and policy enforcement, and continuous validation between design and runtime behaviour. This will enable teams to adopt AI-driven development confidently–without sacrificing quality or control.”
Swagger customer Jason Burch, senior lead solution architect for a leading automotive company, also adds, “When you surface hundreds of internal APIs in one place (in Swagger Catalogue), it creates visibility across product, development, and architecture teams – and it elevates governance in a way that just isn’t possible with our current workflow.”
The Swagger innovations further bolster SmartBear’s focus on application integrity in the AI-accelerated software development lifecycle.
Automated validation
Teams need visibility into APIs being generated by AI tools and automated validation that AI-assisted changes maintain quality and compliance.
Additional Swagger platform advancements include: a new editor experience and AI-powered API generation; context-aware documentation and Spectral-based governance enforcement; MCP Server support for natural language API automation, and expanded multi-protocol support, including OpenAPI 3.1. AsyncAPI 3.0, and GraphQL with unified governance across all protocols.
