Specsavers has appointed former Aviva and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) IT chief Phil Pavitt (pictured) as global CIO.

Pavitt was most recently the global transformation and operations director at insurance giant Aviva, a position he had held since January last year. Prior to that he was CIO and director general of change at HMRC.

At Aviva, Pavitt was responsible for global IT operations, IT security, global procurement, rationalising the IT estate, building a digital architecture and significantly reducing IT expenditure. He was originally recruited by then-Aviva chief operating officer and former CIO Cathryn Riley, who left the company in October 2013.

The firm subsequently appointed Monique Shivanandan, the former CTO at Capital One, as its new CIO, starting in May 2014.

At HMRC, Pavitt was in charge of one of the largest IT operations in the UK government, processing one billion computer transactions per year. During his tenure, he helped to reduce IT spending by £160m per year.

Pavitt joined HMRC in 2009, having previously been CIO at Transport for London.
