Italy rolls out Europe's biggest WiMax trial

Antony Savvas

The Italian government is rolling out Europe’s biggest ever public trial of the WiMax long-range wireless broadband technology.

WiMax will be made available to tens of thousands of citizens throughout the Piedmont and Sicily regions of Italy, with the trial sponsored by the Italian ministry of communications, the Italian ministry of defence, and the Ugo Bordoni Foundation research and development centre.

Marconi has been selected to manage the project and implement WiMax customer premises equipment (CPE) and network infrastructure kit throughout the two regions.

Hardware from Airspan Networks will be used by Marconi. WiMax can support voice and data traffic, and is seen as an ideal alternative to fixed-line broadband in areas where wire infrastructure to offices and homes is not economical.

Smaller scale trials, conducted by operators, are planned in some regions of the UK.
