Fish market finds the net

Antony Savvas

Grimsby Fish Market has set-up a daily customer text message service that advises on the availability of fish supplies for the following day.

To do this in a cost-efficient way, Grimsby, one of the biggest fish markets in the UK, is using Orange’s PC Messenger service.

The service was easy to set-up, requiring the installation of software onto a standard PC from a free CD, and a call to Orange customer services to activate the account.

Currently 40 Grimsby Fish Market customers are signed up to the service, receiving their daily text alert between 11.30am and 12.30pm.  Customers pay a minimal fee for the service to cover the text message charge.

Roger Smith, Grimsby Fish Market dock manager, said, “I find PC Messenger more useful than my previous text messaging service as I don’t have to pre-buy text messages. I only pay for what I use, and at a cheaper rate.”
