
Welsh council goes green with data centre redesign
A council in Wales has a newly tailored green data centre
to reduce its energy costs and carbon footprint. Gwynedd Council had the data centre built by Comms
Room Services; the company designed it with a raised floor, a new ceiling, new server racks and
environmental server room monitoring.
Windstream buys Hosted Solutions for $310 million
Telecommunications company Windstream has acquired Hosted
Solutions, adding five US-based data centres to its portfolio. Windstream has agreed to buy
Hosted Solutions from its previous owner, Abry Partners, for $310 million in cash.
Specsavers expands in Guernsey
Opticians Specsavers has built a new data centre at its La Villize office in Guernsey. The new storage
investment contains information to keep the business running, which equates to 160,000 CD ROMs.
When the facility was first built in 1994 it contained 10 servers. There are now over 200 servers
at the office.
Virtualisation biggest trend for 2011, according to Gartner
Gartner has revealed the top tech trends for the new year, with virtualisation looking like it will
make a big impact in the way data centres are managed in 2011. Of the 1,000 respondents polled, the
majority indicated data growth would be the primary challenge confronting business over the next
year.
Veeam releases VMware Data Protection Report 2010 results
Veeam Software has released the results of its VMware Data Protection Report
2010, revealing that 44% of CIOs are avoiding virtualisation for certain mission-critical
workloads due to concerns about backup and recovery. The report, which questioned 500 CIOs, also
found that 51% of respondents feel using traditional, physical-based backup tools in a virtual
environment is too expensive.
