SMEs treble mobile data traffic

Ian Grant

Mobile data use among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) trebled last year, double the increase among average customers, according to a survey for mobile network operator Orange.

Business Index is a new Orange report that tracks business trends in the mobile market.

Usage was up an average of 150% on the previous year across Orange's business customer base, with SMEs' data traffic rising 290%, the report said.

The rise was driven largely by mobile e-mail and web browsing from mobile devices.

The report found that service rather than price was a prime need for business customers.

Orange UK product director Anthony Keyworth said Orange expected mobile e-mail to grow as more smartphones join the network.

"We are also expecting to see mobile applications for businesses continue to thrive throughout this year. We are already seeing increasing demand for solutions that allow remote workers to transmit data directly back to head office, as well as growing use of office apps and CRM solutions via smartphones," he said.
