Sales of 3D display technologies are predicted to soar in the next eight years.

According to research firm DisplaySearch, 3D display shipments will grow from 700,000 units in 2008 to 196 million units by 2018 and revenue will increase from $902m to $22bn.

Although the success of 3D cinema played a major role for the recent 3D displays market boost, Jennifer Colegrove, director of display technologies at DisplaySearch, said, "A number of manufacturers of consumer electronics devices, including TVs, monitors, notebooks, Blu-ray disc players, and digital cameras/camcorders/photo frames have aggressively promoted 3D in the home."

The market research body also forecasts that sales of 3D-ready TVs will grow from 200,000 units in 2009 to 64 million units in 2018 and television will be the largest 3D application in terms of revenue in 2018 with $17bn.
