Budget 09: Cutting carbon high on government agenda

The government has set out a series of measures to produce further reductions in carbon emissions and to encourage investment in green as part of the Budget.

The chancellor Alistair Darling outlined measures to earmark £405m for supporting green manufacturing and plans to reduce UK carbon emissions by 34% by 2020.

The emphasis on green will remind those in the channel that have quietly dropped the environmental sales pitch as the recession bites that green remains high on the government's agenda.

Darling said that it needed to plan for the future and had to ensure that the UK was delivering on its green commitments.
