Xirrus named as first Wick Hill Wi-Fi partner

Value added distie Wick Hill has named Xirrus as its first ever wireless networking partner as it looks to capitalise on BYOD growth and its subsequent impact on the networking industry.

According to group chairman Ian Kilpatrick (pictured), Wick Hill held off getting involved in distributing wireless until it was better able to deal with current network demands, such as those made by personally-owned devices, and at the same time was future-proofed to address future demands.

Ian Kilpatrick Wick Hill“We went with Xirrus because end-users have the ability to upgrade their technology rather than rip and replace,” he said.  “This was one thing that particularly attracted us.”

Xirrus international sales vice president Sean Larner explained that with the IEEE 802.11ac standard expected to begin to become pervasive in the enterprise during 2013, channel providers will be able to switch 802.11n radios out of their customers’ Xirrus access points and simply plug in an 802.11ac radio instead. The vendor claims this ability is currently unique in the industry.

Added Kilpatrick: “Our lack of a wireless solution hasn’t been through lack of awareness of wireless, but the need to pick a winner.”

Wick Hill will join e92plus in Xirrus’ distribution line-up, targeting deployments in health and education – Xirrus has already been deployed in prominent sites including the Royal Marsden and Alder Hey children’s hospital – as well as enterprises.

“There are opportunities both in greenfield sites and in organisations where there is already hotspot wireless, but where it is not providing the performance or capacity users are demanding and where flexible, upgradable enterprise class wireless is what is really required,” said Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick said that Wick Hill expected to bring around 30 new partners to the table for the time being, ranging from transactional partners to services-led practices and a small number of larger players.
