One of the challenges for anyone in the security market looking for green fields business and high margins is to identify the technology that is coming down the line and likely to make a serious impact on the market.
Those looking for clues as they walked around Earl's Court at InfoSec will have seen plenty to do with security the cloud and consumerisation but also a few people talking about virtualisation security.
The need for customers to secure their virtual environments is a penny that is starting to drop at users who have rushed into setting up virtual networks but are only now starting to think about the consequences of keeping that infrastructure protected.
Bill Smith, vice president of sales at WatchGuard, which is releasing virtualisation security products next week, said that users were aware they had to do something and awareness was increasing.
He added that hundreds had been testing the products in beta and it would be a market for its resellers to target: "This is useful for our channel because the evaluation can be downloaded and installed and be fully functional and they can use it as a sales tool."
Ian Kilpatrick, chairman of Wick Hill, said that more people in charge of security were starting to include virtualisation in their thinking and although it was early stages the market for applications in this area of the market would grow in the next few years.
Shaun Donaldson, director of strategic alliances at Bitdefender, said that not only were there opportunities for secuerity resellers to expand their range but it would open up more convergence with other infrastructure partners.
"There will be more interaction with virtualisation partners and vendors as well. A certain amount of education needs to be done because people are using traditional tools but there is growing awareness," he said.
