One of the constant headaches for both resellers and users alike has been trying to get a sense of the timetable for the move to the cloud and this week has illustrated quite clearly just how difficult that process can be.
Yesterday Citrix said that a lack of skills and a slowness to embrace cloud was pushing the moment at which the technology would become mainstream back past 2015.
But Microsoft has issued its own research using words like 'surging' to describe the current takeup of cloud services from small and medium sized customers.
The vendor's take on the future includes a market where SMEs are increasing the amount of cloud servicves they pay for in the next five years, with the level of expenditure doubling by 2017.
The number of small firms using at least one paid cloud service will triple in the next three years.
"The cloud levels the playing field for SMBs, helping them compete in today's quickly changing business environment, by spending less time and money on IT and more time focused on their most important priority - growing their businesses," said Marco Limena, vice president of Operator Channels at Microsoft.
