Resellers have to be aware that the world has shifted away from Windows dominance as consumerisation starts to have a dramatic effect on the platforms being used in the workplace.

Steve Brazier, president and CEO of Canalys, said that when the PC market shipments included tablets and smartphone Windows was only holding onto 36% of the market with other alternatives taking a 64% share.

"This has been driven by what Apple has done and what Google has done," he said referring to their iPad and Android activities.

"The big applications are no more and the world has gone mobile and you can't rely on a PC and we see an app-based world in the future," he added.

"Distribution was led by the PC industry, with HP at the centre of that, but that has changed and the classical PC industry has gone downwards and distribution needs to flex to different environments," Brazier said at the Computer 2000 Vendor Partner Summit.

Brazier said that when it surveyed resellers the main areas which offered the channel growth at the moment included: infrastructure, security, managed services and enterprise mobility.

The challenges he identified for the channel included the uncertain economic environment, changing consumption models, constraints on working capital and a shortage of skills.

One of the major challenges for the industry as a whole, along with consumerisation, is the increasing pressure on wireless. Brazier said that with iPads only connecting via wi-fi and the trend by providers to cut unlimited data packages there was a major strain on bandwitdh.
