Hosted services provider Rackspace is to embark on a new recruitment drive and is in talks with a number of universities to establish cloud computing as an element of the IT curriculum.

The firm's international MD Taylor Rhodes said that some of the roles currently open at Rackspace had been "open for far longer than we would expect despite us receiving as many as 200 applications every month."
Rhodes bemoaned a lack of technical expertise in the pool of potential candidates, saying: "They have inadequate levels of knowledge of core operating systems and often no experience of working with cloud technology. Simply put, there is a cloud skills shortage."
The provider today launched a new campaign in the UK designed to address the perceived lack of cloud expertise. Dubbed Mission 350, it is hoped the programme will attract 350 new recruits to the firm in the coming months.
Collaboration with the education sector, recently highlighted by the channel as a good means to attract a technically-minded workforce, will form a major part of the Mission 350 programme, but Rackspace also said it was on the hunt for more experienced professionals to fill non-technical roles in customer services and sales as well.
