BT Engage IT has sealed a partnership with firewall specialist Palo Alto to provide security options alongside its network and data packages.

The services division of BT Business has reacted to an increasing call from customers for greater protection against a rising number of security threats adding prevention to its portfolio in the form of the Palo Alto product line.

The next generation firewalls offered by Palo Alto can limit traffic to approved applications and identify threats as they try to get access to the network.

Hanss Haverhals, account director at BT Engage IT, said that it needed to respond to the customer requirement for greater levels of threat protection.

"We're seeing a new level of sophistication in security threats driven by profit-motivated hackers. many security tools are ineffective against threats targeting applications," he said.

Karl Driesen, vice president EMEA at Palo Alto, said that around 80% of the most serious threats to firms were at the application level and many of them resisted definitions and were multi-vector making it harder to counter them.

"As a result, tools like traditional firewalls and IPS/IDS cannot effectively control applications, cannot recognise the variety of threats targeting the applications and increase complexity and cost," he said.
