Hewlett-Packard's CEO has indicated it plans to ramp up the revenues it brings in from the software side of its business.

Meg Whitman has been quoted in a German newspaper outlining an ambition to grow the current $5bn it gets from software sales by double or even triple that amount.

Although she did not give a timeframe in the interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung there were indications that part of that revenue boost is expected to come from British software player Autonomy which HP splashed out $12bn for.

One of the pressing questions that Whitman would not be drawn on was the future of the Web OS platform which HP acquired as part of the Palm deal last year.

Although recent reports have hinted at a sale of the unit Whitman said that the decision that needed to be made had to be a good one not necessarily a quick one.
