VMware has told partners to put virtualisation of business software applications front and centre as a means to move from a basic virtualised environment to a true cloud infrastructure at its 2011 VMworld summit in Copenhagen.

Andy Hunt, vice president of EMEA partners, said partners needed to ramp up their activities around virtualising more parts of their customers' IT, with the emphasis on business apps.

"For the next 12 months, focusing on virtualising business apps is a critical skill that partners will need to offer," he said.

Hunt revealed the firm will be adding new a new business app competency to its partner programme during the fourth quarter to speed things along.

A recent report from analysts at Canalys backed up VMware's view, suggesting that the development of nimbler, on demand app store type software will be a key transformational force in the channel in years to come.
