The call for the channel to push Software Asset Management (SAM) comes on the back of disturbing research by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) which revealed earlier this week that financial directors only had a slim grasp on what was happening in their firms.
The BSA findings showed that not only did 30% of financial directors think pirated software could be being used in their organisations but only 7% thought the products they did use were being properly deployed.
Matt Fisher, sales and marketing director at License Dashboard, said that SAM could be the answer for many customers struggling to get a grip on the situation.
"With software licenses consuming about 40% of an organisation's annual IT budget, ensuring you get the most value from it should be a top priority. Software asset management provides a cost-effective way to ensure this significant portion of your IT budget isn't wasted," he said.
The BSA also concluded after its research that the channel had to do more to help customers get on top of their software estates.
Julian Swan, director, compliance marketing EMEA, BSA, said that as well as keeping on the right side of the law there were also financial benefits from being on top of software.
"Managing software can also save money by helping companies from over-licensing - i.e. purchasing licenses they do not need - and making sure that employees have the correct software tools to do their jobs effectively," he said.
