UK software firm Sage appears to be near the front of the pack trying to acquire Australian small business accounting specialist MYOB.

According to reports the UK firm has confirmed that it is looking to acquire MYOB which is being sold by private equity firms Archer Capital and HabourVest Patners which bought the vendor back in 2009.

MYOB built up a strong reputation in the small business accountancy software market over the last three decades and used to be in the UK market before exiting in 2008 to concentrate solely on the Australian and New Zealand markets.

For Sage, which already has a strong presence in the small business market the acquisition would strengthen its stake down under.
