Good news for the channel with EMC's announcement that the new SMB VNXe unified storage packages will not be available to its longstanding partner Dell which has been selling low-end EMC gear since 2001.

EMC made no bones about the fact Dell was being excluded from the product line with its CEO Joe Tucci stating publicly that Dell would not resell the VNXe range. Given Dell's other moves in the storage space, especially its acquisition of EqualLogic in 2007 and its bid for 3PAR in autumn last year, it's probably no great shock, but it does offer a level of clarity for EMC resellers.
They can take comfort from the knowledge they will not be competing against Dell with the same products and EMC's decision has effectively given them the opportunity to go out and sell the VNXe range to their customer base without worrying about Dell. In some ways, EMC's decision helps to return the channel back to the status quo that existed ten years ago. It's just a pity that EMC has taken the long way around to get back to where it was.
