Security resellers will have kept an eye on the developments at Lockheed Martin over the weekend after the defence specialist revealed it had been the victim of a major attack designed to penetrate its network.
The company managed to defend itself but the sort of data that it has in its vaults, which includes sensitive product, employee and financial information, it is understandably a target for a nation-state attack.
The firm said it dealt with the problem swiftly but the public announcement of the attack will have been a boon to resellers trying to convince customers that attacks are becoming more sophisticated and are on the rise.
In a statement Lockheed Martin described the attack as "significant and tenacious" and pointed out that is faced constant threats "from adversaries around the world".
Lockheed Martin joins a list of large names that have been attacked or even suffered breaches already this year including RSA, Play.com and soap specialist Lush.
Steve Watts, SecurEnvoy co-founder, said that the channel needed to be pitching solutions which offered defence in-depth against attacks.
"Modern IT security is all about building layers of defence on a modular basis, using today's security tools - including multi-factor authentication with integrated redundancy and fail-safe systems," he said.
"If one element is compromised, you switch in other elements, as laid down in your IT security contingency plans," he added.
