A survey of SMEs by Symantec has found 5%, around 240,000 UK firms, are not taking any steps to backup data and are leaving themselves exposed to risks of data loss and downtime.
The research also discovered that each UK SME has around six outages a year and significant numbers did not have a disaster recovery plan in place.
Ross Walker, director of distribution and SMB for UK and Ireland at Symantec, said that the findings showed a level of disorganisation in the small business community with a lack of plans around backing up and restoring data.
He said there appeared to be some businesses viewing disaster recovery as a non priority leaving themselves open to the prospect of losing thousands of pounds through outages.
But the failure spells an opportunity for the channel Walker argued and it would be encouraging partners to use the survey to prompt sales.
"Resellers can be asking their customers if they are taking appropriate measures and what steps they have taken and what they have in place," he said.
