The acquisition of 3Com has sent Hewlett-Packard's share of the worldwide Ethernet port market skyrocketing during the second calendar quarter of 2010, according to In-Stat figures.

HP now accounts for 20% of Ethernet port shipments and has bumped D-Link down to third place, said analysts.

"It is still too early to tell if synergies between HP and 3Com will result in a stronger competitor to Cisco, it is definitely a noteworthy contender to watch closely," said In-Stat.

Global Ethernet port shipments grew 3.3% between Q1 and Q2 this year, although total revenues slipped 2%.

Fixed 10 Gigabit Ethernet port shipments were up 21.1%, although overall 10 Gigabit Ethernet shipments fell. Total fixed port shipments, meanwhile grew 3.7% in the quarter.
