Viatel has sold its UK retail business VTL to a new venture called MDNX for an undisclosed sum.

The two units had already been separated, and operated as independent units for the past 12 months said Viatel.

The Viatel name will be retained by parent Viatel Holdings (Bermuda) Ltd, which will concentrate on the European network wholesale business.

"[This] market is an exciting area and we're looking forward to putting more emphasis on our operations here," said VHB CEO Lucy Woods.

MDNX, meanwhile, is a new midmarket, SME and public sector focused managed networks and hosted services provider formed from the combination of Cisco and Microsoft partner Solution1, VTL, and ISP Community Internet Group Ltd, which was also acquired today.

The new firm will be headed by Solution1 CEO Mark Thompson.
