The failure to produce an iPad beater and the damp squib of the teenager targeted Kin phone have hit Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in the pocket losing the executive half of his bonus.

Ballmer will have to settle for just $670,000, which is half of what he could have been paid out in a bonus, despite the success of Windows 7 and the way he has navigated the vendor through the choppy waters of the recession.

In an SEC filing the vendor revealed that Ballmer's reduced package was due to the performance of Microsoft in some key areas including "the unsuccessful launch of the Kin phone; loss of market share in the company's mobile phone business".

That was despite the vendor reporting a record $62.5bn in revenue and $24.1bn in operating income.
