Gartner has set out the six rights that cloud consumers have that will ensure they are provided with a good service.
One of the factors holding back wider adoption of cloud computing has been the fear of inconsistent service delivery along with concerns about security.
But having established the global IT council for cloud services Gartner wants to define the rights that customers can expect.
"If cloud services are commoditised, providers should offer stronger customer guarantees," said Daryl Plummer, managing vice president and Gartner fellow, "However, service providers either do not offer protections or vary greatly in the protections they do offer."
He added that although customers were entitles to know exactly where they stood with a cloud service they did have to take the responsibility to understand service license requirements to make sure they are on the right side of the law.
The six rights as defined by Gartner are:
The right to retain ownership, use and control one's own data
The right to SLAs that address liabilities, remediation and business outcomes
The right to notfication and choice about changes that affect the service consumer's business processes
The right to understand the technical limitations or requirements of the service yp front
The right to know what security processes the provider follows.
