As well as trying to attract Sun users Novell is also hoping it can coax resellers onto its PartnerNet community with its migration promotions offering a one-for-one license swap.
Promotions of this nature are well tested ways of trying to grow market share in the software channel with NetSuite targeting Sage in a similar fashion last year.
"If Sun customers are concerned about the future of Solaris, then they can now migrate to SUSE Linux Enterprise. If Sun customers are concerned about the future roadmap for Sun's identity management products, then they can now migrate to Novell Identity Manager 4," said Justin Steinman, vice president of solution and product marketing at Novell.
"If you are a former Sun partner, then you may be interested in establishing a new relationship with a company like Novell, who is deeply committed to the partner channel," he added.
Novell itself is facing a challenge increasing its foothold in the identity and security markets and has been encouraging its channel to sell more of its portfolio.
Oracle was not prepared to discuss the promotion.
