The hard drive business has exited the recession quickly with demand holding up in both consumer and commercial markets.

Speaking at an event in Barcelona the president and CEO of Western Digital John Coyne said that it had seen demand get back to pre recession levels.

He said that on a consumer front what was once seen as an accessory was now a more essential purchase for users.

"It is a fundametal requirement of the way people lead their lives today." he said.

On the commercial front he pointed to the growth of cloud computing and datacentres as markets that were providing storage growth.

Coyne said the speed of recovery after the dip had been quick and it was expecting growth in the market to continue.

"There is more user generated content created everyday than the TV, film studios and music studios," he said.
