Companies head to hosted services in full knowledge of risks

Despite the apparent risks associated with cloud computing many customers are ploughing on with the technology regardless in an effort to unlock the promised savings and efficiencies on offer.

Despite the apparent risks associated with cloud computing many customers are ploughing on with the technology regardless in an effort to unlock the promised savings and efficiencies on offer.

According to research from audit and strategy specialists ISACA based on responses from IT professionals the number already using the technology in the UK stands at 40% but among those users there is a rather carefree attitude towards preparing for risks.

Almost two-thirds of those quizzed revealed that they would take risks in anticipation for a better return for the business.

Paul Williams, ISACA strategy chair, said that there had to be more understanding of the potential risks and improved management in response to what might go wrong.

"Enterprises must never crash and burn because the risk was ignored or misjudged," he said.

Resellers have been advised to concentrate not just on delivering cloud services but to help build and deploy them.

Rupert Collier, e-business product manager at ComputerLinks, said that users had to understand that virtual security had to be treated in the same way that companies looked after physical data protection.
